“In-vessel” composting requires less space for operating than traditional outdoor windrow/pile composting, is not disrupted by weather changes, eliminates odor issues, eliminates liquid run-off from composting site, reducing fire danger and greatly accelerates the composting process, composting the organic waste in only 72 hours. The BW process is simple. Units are loaded at one end from a conveyor belt attached to a mixer/hopper. The mixer/hopper is loaded with a mix of waste product and a bulking agent (wood chips, sawdust, corn stoved, hay, etc.). BW units compost the mixture in 72 hours. During the aerobic composting process, temperatures inside the drum are at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit. An electric motor (1/3 HP to 5 HP) and gear box underneath the drum rotate it gently during the composting process. At the end of the process, a conveyor belt feeds the compost from the drum into trailers or to bagging equipment.

BW Organics’ composters are sturdy. Repair and maintenance costs are minimal. Units placed in the field over ten years ago still function perfectly. There are no moving parts inside of the rotating drums where most of the work is going on. The drums are made out of ¾” steel.

Advantages of In-Vessel Composting

 Although composting can be achieved using a number of different processes, in-vessel composting offers a number of advantages including:

  • Temperatures within the vessel are maintained above 130º for at least three days.  Under these conditions weed seeds and pathogenic micro-organisms will be destroyed.
  • Composting can be completed rapidly, resulting in product stabilization/sanitation in 3 to 4 days
  •  This process composts raw wastes which are isolated from the environment until the process is complete
  • The site manager has precise control of moisture, temperature and aeration during the composting process
  • The raw waste loses all offensive odors within 24 hours of composter start-up
  • In-vessel composting can maintain a rapid decomposition process year-round regardless of external ambient conditions
  • The relatively small footprint allows the entire process to take place within a controlled environment (inside a building).
